What is the exact message? Does it say not to use the disc in a 2x DVD±RW or something?

I case says : This disk is capable of recording at 2-2x speed. Due to drive defect, permanent damage could occur to hardware and media idf this disc is used with some older non-2X speed DVD-RW recorders. I need to make sure it is ok to use in my PC.

Hi Toby,
According to the Dell User Guide
GDR-8162B
The drive "should" support the media but honestly about the only way to be sure is try it.
Happy Holidays!

the good fortune to run into the ones I do and the eyesight to tell the
difference.

Hi Toby,
If we are still talking about the 8162B drive, unfortunately you will not be able to use this drive to burn DVD, data or video. This is a DVD-ROM drive (read-only) device, not a DVD+/-RW (writer/burner), sorry.
The drive supports "reading" the media that already has data on it but will not recognize blank DVD or CD media.
Merry Christmas!
