DVD/CD problem
I have a Dimension 4700 with a CDRW/DVD and a CD-ROM. Neither will read a disk. There are now errors diplayed in device manager and when you look in explorer both drives are there. When you have a disk in either drive and you click on a drive, it says to insert a disk. When you put a disk in a drive it reads it, but doesn't do anything. While it's reading the disk the cursor has the little CD flashing next to it. Every once in a while when you reboot the computer you can use a drive, but it will stop working right in the middle of whatever you are doing. I've tried games, movies, and audio disks with the same results. Any help would be great. Thanks!
Doug

Hi Doug,
Lets try some standards if have not already run them; please click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 15, article 1; Section 20, article 3; Section 11, article 2; Section 15, article 14 to verify the drives are running in DMA mode and not PIO mode; Section 12, article 3 from Dell to test the drives.
Also may I ask, what name/model of drives do you have, have you checked the Drivers & Downloads link for a possible firmware update for these drives?
Best Regards!

I'm repling from work right now so I'll get you that info when I get home, but one thing my son showed me was that the CDRW/DVD does play audio CD's. It will not play a movie or load a game. The CDROM does not play anything. Also a so called expert told me that if one of the drives is bad it will make the other not work either. That doesn't sound right, but who knows!! Thanks for your reply.

Hi Doug,
Your friend, expert is right, at times one bad drive can effect the second drive simply because they share the same IDE cable, not always but possible. The drive not playing a moive could be related to the DVD decoding software. A recent Windows update, video card, even sound card driver update can overwrite or corrupt a file needed by the software. Sometimes uninstalling / reinstalling the software can correct the problem. Dell has been shipping PowerDVD as the software, so check and make sure you have the disc before uninstalling her.
Also another issue with games, has been Sonic`s DLA program, if you have it, consider disabling the software. Same CD/RW link, Section 13-0, article 12.
Best Regards!

Here is the info about the drives.
1 - TSST corp CDRW/DVD TSH492B - Driver verison is 5.1.2535.0
2 - HL-DT-ST CD-ROM GCR-8483B - Driver verison is the same
Under the IDE controllers are 2 primary IDE channel listed. Under the advanced settings it's set to DMA.
Hope this helps!

I missed the part you mentioned in your first post about error codes in Device Manager, sorry my bad.
Click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 12, article 10 and see if this will help.

May I ask, what error codes do you see in Device Manager?
Best Regards,
Jeff

I don't have right at this moment, but I do remember that one of the screens said the disk had no digital data. It said that for both drives. If I had to guess right now I think one of the error messages were 00f021b. Like I said this is only a guess. I try and get the correct codes tonight. One other thing in my first post I stated now errors in device manager, It should have stated no errors in device manger, sorry. Thanks!

Hi Doug,
Amazing how one little letter can change the whole meaning of something .. lol.. I am the worst for typos.
I will check back later night and see if you have anything to report on the messages.
Best Regards!

Here are the error codes I got when I tested the drives in the hardware diagnostics when you reboot and hit F12 and enter into that ulitilty. Both drives got 0F00:021D and 0F00:131D, MSG block 561, 562, and 563. I'm not sure if those are suppose to be zeros or o's, but either way thats the codes i got. Like I said they failed audio, read, and seek parts of the test. I tried different ribbon cables. Windows sees the drives, but the drives do not see disks when you put them in. Thanks

Well this weekend I figured out what was wrong with the CD/DVD's, they were somehow both bad. I borrowed a couple of differnet drives and tested them on my computer and they worked fine. I put mine back in and they failed. I don't know how both could be bad! The computer is only 6 months old. Anyway could you tell me how to contact Dell to see if I can get them replaced. The other question I have is my copy of Media Center seems to be corrupt. Is there anyway to download that? I tried to go to the Mircosoft site but it would not let me download it. Thanks for your help.
