DVD+R Double Layer problem

Question

When i enter a blank memorex 8.5 gb DVD+R Double Layer on my nec 6650a dvd drive of my inspiron 6000 and i open up my burning software it says 8.0 gb free instead of saying 8.5 as it's advertised on the disc ! Does anybody know why it doesnt say 8.5 gb ?

hi its true no matter what software u use the software will show only show you 8gb as compared to 8.5 which is advertised on any DVD-dual layer..and there is a reason for that it uses the .5 gb space for storing information of the various subdirectories and also indexing..in a laymans language the .5 gb space is being used for storing what information is being stored where on the DVD..i hope that resolves your doubt.

Hi not only does it show 8gb but it also wont record more than 8gb ,or it will say the amount im over with if add more than 8.0 gb data...Also when i insert a 4.7gb disc it will say 4.4 instead of 4.7...  there's a .3 difference compared to the .5 difference of the dvd r dl disc:smileyindifferent: Message Edited by george71 on 04-08-200601:07 PM

Hi George,The reference to 'size' is misleading in the industry. I cannot post the link to Video Help because it mentions How to burn Copy protected DVD`s on this page, which is against Dell`s Policy, however I will post the information from their page:In the computer world 1 KB data = 1024 bytes so 4 700 000 000 bytes / 1024 = 4 589 843KB / 1024 = 4482MB / 1024 = 4.37GB.
