DVDs/CDs cause Explorer to freeze

Whenever I've had my Inspiron 8600 on for a while and I want to put in a CD or a DVD, Explorer will freeze if I try to access My Computer. (Similar thing happens when I open up Nero Burning Rom -- the program will freeze when it tries to read the CD.) I have to reboot my laptop with the DVD/CD in the drive, and then watch it/listen to it after it finishes restarting. I'm using a QSI CDRW/DVD SBW242U drive, running on XP SP1, 512 mb.

  hi try this: if this doesnt work. replace the  drive.

  1. Click the Start button, click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type Regedit, and then click OK.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM >CurrentControlSet >Control>Class >{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

  1. On the right hand side of the window, click UpperFilters.
  2. Click Edit on the menu bar.
  3. Click Delete, and then click OK.
  4. On the right-hand side of the window, click LowerFilters.
  5. Click Edit on the menu bar.
  6. Click Delete, and then click OK.
  7. Click File, and then click Exit.
  8. Restart the computer normally.

When I went into regedit, I didn't see UpperFilters, but LowerFilters was there, and so I deleted it. However, now I can't burn anything. Nero will only allow me to rip an image, and RecordNow! doesn't recognize any recorders.
