I've been using the Roxio update to 5.3.5.10 for nearly a year now, both on laptops (Inspiron 2650-5100) and desktops (Dimension-Opti-Plex) and have had no problems.
I installed this update mainly because after several Windows updates and/or other software installation, Roxio would not detect my CD-RW as such and would only read CDs. I find that version 5.3.5.10 detects more CD-RW models.
It doesn't burn any faster, there's still the awful DirectCD (which I recommend not to install), and it still burn errors more than Nero Burning ROM (which is WAY better and reliable), but at least it gets the job done more often than not.
