error at start up

When I try to start my computer I get the following message
"stop:c0000135{unable to locate component}
This application has failed to start because RPCRT4.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem.
I have no idea how to do this. My computer did not come with a start up disc, instead I received a card that said I could go back to an earilier time. I cannot do this if the computer will not start. This as far as it gets in the XP start up. I've run the diagnostic and it also stops and gives me the same error. I called Dell but the expired warranty people are out until Monday. Anyone have ideas? Please, I'm a teacher and my report cards are stuck in my computer. :) I have to send them home on Monday.

Thank you for posting your message at the Dell Community Forums.

Are you able to boot up using the Last Known Good Configuration?

Refer to the following link.

No that didn't work. I've tried it several times and after I go through the steps in the instructions I get the same message. Any other ideas?

Still nothing. I've tried everything I can think of. I did do a search which said I needed to do an update to fix the problem. Just not sure how I can add anything when I can't open anything and only get the blue screen error. CONFUSED.

It's possible that this error is an indication the drive is failing as well. I would suggest running diagnostics on the drive for confirmation. Refer to the following link:

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/en/document?c=us&docid=A9E3A15597A04AFBB02EE16785D39C5C&journalid=9BF2CFCC434411DBB08ADFC1CEB4ABB7&l=en&s=gen

Let us know the results.

This is the message:
Error Code 0F00:136C
Msg:IDE device failed:Blank media or no media is present in optical drive. Test requires media with data(Resource CD, Installation CD).

No clue what that means. I did not get any disks with my laptop that could be used for recovery. I can't get online to download a patch or fix. Any ideas?
Thanks for the support,
Monica

The error indicates there was no media in your optical drive during testing. No other errors, which is good.

Try this, reboot your computer and press F8 when you see the Dell Splash Screen. Select the option to boot into Windows Safe Mode.

If you can get into Safe Mode, select Start --> Run. Where it says Open, type the following:

sfc/ scannow

And hit enter. You may need to insert your Windows XP reinstallation disk.

If that does not work, I'm not sure. Any other members have ideas other than a complete reinstall or restore?

When I try that I only get lines of text saying the same thing over and over. I can't get any further. I requested a system restore disk. Do you know if there is anyway to get things off the hard drive at this point? I do know I will begin to save pics and other important documents on a flash drive in the future. In all my years using computers I've never had one truly crash. I could always get into my data one way or another. :smileysad:

You could take the drive out of the notebook and put it into a USB enclosure. Then copy the files you want from the drive onto another computer. That would probably be the easiest.

Hope that helps.
