When a drive does not show in the Device manager, it is usually caused by
a poor contact or connection.  Physically remove the drive and inspect the
contacts.  Then reinstall it in an effort to improve the connection.

You wrote, "built in self test" failed - error code 2874.  Was that the
drive diagnostics?  It may mean the diagnostics test failed or the drive
failed.  If it is the Diagnotics that failed, you can boot with the Dell
Drivers and Utilities to start the diagnostics.

Pressing F12 at startup should bring you to the boot menu.
Choose boot ftom CD drive with the Dell Drivers and Utilities
disc in the drive.  Thsi should load the Diagnostics.

I will have to wait to try that. The disc did not come with my system but I ordered one a few days ago. I'll let you know if it helps.
