Mount the drive in an external case and attach it to a working system -- if the drive hasn't completely failed, you may be able to retrieve the data.  If you can't get the drive to work this way, you'll have to weigh the cost of data recovery against the value of the data.  There are companies that specialize in retrieving data from failed drives - but the cost isn't insignificant. It starts in the $600 range and can run into thousands of dollars.
