Error code on disk drive

I got an error code on my computer. It was fine and just stopped working while I was using it. The code indicated a possible loose connection or replacement needed. Tried removing and replacing with no luck. My question is if I replace my drive, how do I find out if I lost all of my photos and other files? I thought it did an automatic backup but not sure, and I can't remember the last time I did one myself. Is there a way to recover? This laptop is only 2 years old and I didn't expect it to just stop working out of the blue. It is an inspiron 15 3521 running Windows 10. Any suggestions on retrieving my data? I cannot get it to load at all. The diagnostic won't even come up now. But all was well except the drive.

Mount the drive in an external case and attach it to a working system -- if the drive hasn't completely failed, you may be able to retrieve the data.  If you can't get the drive to work this way, you'll have to weigh the cost of data recovery against the value of the data.  There are companies that specialize in retrieving data from failed drives - but the cost isn't insignificant. It starts in the $600 range and can run into thousands of dollars.

Example of an external case:
