error encountered accessing first fixed disk

Question

dimension 4100, windows 98, when i turn on computer the dell icon comes on and locks there. I am trying to use the recovery cd to see if this will fix my problem. I get an error message that reads: an error was encountered while attempting to access the first fixed disk. Please run your system setup utility and verify that the first fixed disk is properly configured. Only option is ok. then the screen goes to the a:\ prompt

I apologize it this seems patently obvious, but did you actually go into your system setup utility and check that your drive is properly configured?
