event viewer error: driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR3.

I'm starting to see this error more often in event viewer on win2k pro Dimension L866R:

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR3.

And my computer sometimes makes weird wizzing noises. My drive about die?

guy456789,

Thanks for using the Dell Community Forum.

What diagnostics program specifically is giving that error and is that how it reads, word for word?

At the Dell screen, Press CRTL+ALT+D & run the HDD diagnostics.  Sounds like HDD failing.  Hope you've backed up your data

The exact error message is in the EVENT VIEWER application (under SYSTEM LOG) of Windows 2000 Professional. It's the application that comes with WIN2k and the message I copied in the subject is word for word.

And it appears my systemtag says I'm not in warranty. Does that mean I'm not going to be able to get this drive fixed by Dell (if it does mean bad drive)?
