File in use by another program...

I downloaded some fils ages ago, and, obviously, they are massive files. Only problem is, now, when I try to delete them (because I only have 2% free space on my C: drive) I get a message saying that another program is using the file and so it can't be deleted. I can't think which program is using the file- it's not my media player or share scan program. Does anyone know a way round it because I really need to free up some more space!
Thanks

Try this, sometimes it works for me. Right-click on file and check, then uncheck the box for "Read-Only". Hit OK and then try deleting the file. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. Worth a shot though

If that doesn't work then:

One way is to boot into Safe Mode and then delete from there.

If that doesn't work, then you can use a bootdisk to boot into dos and then use the "deltree" command to delete the files. You can get a bootdisk at www.bootdisk.com if you need one.

Well this happens sometimes with divx files, I had the problem myself.
I deleleted the file via DOS Mode.
But do not access the dir where the file is before.
Best is go to START menu ---> RUN and then go to the dir manually.
But sometimes even that doesn't work.

Well hope it works for you

Thank you so much Bacillus. That worked a treat. My computer should have lots more free space now and might work properly!
Thanks
