Get to the Bottom of the CD/CDRW/DVD Problem
I have been through several hundred postings regarding the CD/CDRW/DVD issues and read the FAQs. Many folks are having the same problems as me, namely that MyComputer is not recognizing the disk in the drive. I can't install software or burn a CD. I am using a Dell Inspiron m600 laptop on Win-XP.
Although the problems seem well defined, unfortunately, there is no insightful solution...yet.
Is the problem with:
... the DVD hardware? Device Manager says it is "working properly".
... drivers? the usual suspect, but no evidence suggesting they are not working properly.
... with Windows? Hard to tell, but I don't think so. Computer Manager shows no content in the CD drive.
... In the registry? Willing to try.
... the Roxio software? Can't tell.
... BIOS? Is there a preferred sequence?
Without a clear course of action, what am I to do?
... Uninstall the CD drive. No one has suggested that.
... Upgrade the drivers. Where are they?
... Reinstall Windows. Not suggested by anyone.
... Fix the registry. Only one posting suggested it could be fixed from there.
... Uninstall the Roxio? Maybe, but no one has advocated that.
... BIOS. Can't boot to the CD drive.
After 12 hours trying to fix this "Dellemon", here is my question: What caused the problem and how do I fix it so it does not happen again?
If you are frustrated too, please reply "amen".

I notice that there has been no reply to my previous comments, so here is a followup.
One of the postings mentioned that Windows XP- SP1 may have caused the CD/CDRW/DVD issues.
Has anyone confirmed this?
If I install the recent Windows patches thru SP-4, does anyone believe that will "cure" any problems that SP-1 may have caused?

Edit the Registry.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/Curretcontrolset/Control/Class/{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
On the File menu, click Export.
Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type UpperFilters, and then click Delete on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes. NOTE: If this data type is missing, continue to the next method.
Click the REG_MULTI_SZ data type LowerFilters, and then click Delete on the Edit menu. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
Quit the Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

I forgot to mention that I updated the Norton AntiVirus definitions yesterday and ran the program twice. No viruses, worms or trojans were detected.

The suggested registry hack did not work.
I deleted the two files i/a/w the suggestion, but the drive is still not reading the CD.
Any other suggestions will be considered.
Does anyone think this is a MSFT service pack1-induced problem?

Ok, here is what happened.
After getting no where, I finally went into the Customer Support keyboard chat with Dell. I used the word "defective" a few times. The guy on the other end, agreed to send me a new hard drive by Airborne. That was nice.
I thought they would know exactly what to send me since they had my Dell Service code.
The new drive arrived two days later. Unfortunately, it was the wrong size and did not fit. So, I asked for another one via e-mail to the same party, and this time I included the part number from the bottom of the old drive.
The new drive arrived by Airborne. I installed it in two minutes; booted up and presto, it worked just fine.

Zonny, consider yourself VERY LUCKY!!! :)
I've given up on trying to troubleshoot, and I've just ordered a new EXTERNAL CDRW/DVD drive. I'm hoping that the problem's not software related, and that nothing horrible will happen with the brand new, external drive.

I have been having this same issue with my Inspiron 8600. The problem started as an intermittent one over a month ago. I attempted to uninstall and reinstall the drive, the PCI Bus, even reinstalled Windows, all to no avail. I then got on the phone with Dell and they had me run a disgnostic (of course, during which it read the disks just fine), but following another reboot, it wouldn't read any thing. I found that the disk is readable IF it is in the drive at the time that I start up the computer or uninstall and reinstall the drive or PCI Bus.
I got Dell to send me another drive... this didn't work. I asked them to send me a drive of a different brand, they agreed, and then sent me another of the same brand (we went through this process twice). Finally I got a new brand drive, and that did not work either. I have been unable to locate drivers for either of these drives outside of the XP drivers. I have installed all the updates from Dell that applied to my computer, and it STILL is not working.
I should clarify:
First Drive: HL-DT-ST GCA 4040N
New Drive: NEC ND-6100A
Are their any SOLID solutions to this problem that have worked for more than a handful of people????
Thanks all... I am done ranting.

If you talk to (or keyboard chat with) anyone in support, use the word "defective" frequently.
When they offer to send you a new one, pull out the old one and give them the part number first.
