Getting "Incorrect Function" or blank disc
Hi,
I have a Dell Precision 490 at work which was all working fine until about a month ago. The Philips 8801 drive has stopped reading anything at all. If i enable disc burning, I get a blank disc... disc burning off, I get "D:/ not accessible - Incorrect Function". I've tried several things on this and other forum all with both music, cdr's and dvd's. The drive still trys to boot when the pc is restarted, so it should still be ok:
* Removed drivers & rebooted
* Removed all Roxio Apps
* Deleted SCSI/Raid controllers and rebooted
* Removed Daemon Tools just in case
Theres no problems listed in the device manager. Can't think of anything that i installed recently which should affect the drive at all.
Any suggestions? Thanks
Ste

Hi Ste,
I am assuming you may have seen this Microsoft article on the error message.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315350
You may have done this but most of Roxio`s experts recommend a clean uninstall of their program. I have the steps in Section 13-0, article 32 of the CD/rW link in my post. Run this if you have not, then jump over to Nero`s site and download their trail version, it is free and test the drive. If it works, then the issue was more than likely a software conflict. If it does not, then run the diagnostic on the drive. Same CD/RW link, Section 12, article 3; step#2 from Dell-ChrisM
Best Regards!

I left a bootable cd in the drive by accident this morning, when i turned it on it paused for about 5 mins trying to boot from the disc. I get the feeling the drive might just be dead
I'll try giving it a clean or something but I don't hold out much hope.
Thanks for your reply. If you think of anything else to try then let me know

Hi Dfects,
Were you able to run the Dell diagnostic from the Utlity CD?
If not, try once more from the Hard drive;
P-490 Diagnostic
Dell did release a firmware update for this drive, whether it will help, I cannot say.
Philips 8801
Best Regards

On the spindle test it gave me:
0f00: 2876
Optical Drive BIST -- Spindle test failed.
Not sure if thats related to it not finding the data track on the disc?

Do you know if they'd require me to send anything back? Its really not possible for me to send the PC back as its obviously my work machine. Wouldn't mind posting the drive back.
Thanks for all your help!

Hi Dfects,
Spindle test failure requires the drive to be replaced. If you are under warranty, please contact Dell, give them the results of the test and they will replace the drive, no hassle at all.
If out of warranty, you will need to purchase a new drive my friend.
Best Regards!

Hi Ste,
You will not send the PC back. Dell will ship a replacement drive to you. Depending on your warranty, You or a Tech working for/under Dell will remove the old drive and install the new one. The old drive is shipped back to Dell.
Best Regards!
