Hard disk read failure- No bootable devices ...
Hi,
I was working on my inspiron 1100 laptop, and left it for an hour. When I came back- the screen was shut down and I tried to turn it on again- but nothing happened, so I restarted the laptop. (There was a cd inside, and I was viewing it before this happened.)
Anyway, when I restarted, I got the "Hard disk read failure- No bootable devices" message, and I have no idea what to do, nothing works. I've tried removing the cd I was watching, putting it back, everything. I even tried ctrl-alt-del when the dell screen appears, it leads me nowhere. Restarting the laptop multiple times has done no good.
I've seen other topics in the forum on this subject- but none of them seems to be the right solution for me.
Please- If anyone has an idea and can explain it to me in simple english- I would be very very grateful.
Thank You,
melish

Boot the system from the Dell CD that shipped with it (the Diagnostic/Utility CD). Test the system, including the drive (try a full surface scan).
If the drive is not recognized, or returns an error code, try reseating it.
If it still fails, and the system is under warranty, report the error code to Dell, which will ship you a replacement drive. If it's no longer under warranty, a new drive is not expensive (40G for just over $100US); replace the drive and restore your backups.

remove the hdd and reseat it, also, remove battery and ac adapter, then press and hold power button for 15 sec, that will drain power and the system should recognize all devices again
also, remove cdrom and try to boot with no cdrom
