Hard drive diagnostics fail return code 7
Hi sorry for creating a new thread, but my pc is out of action and ive had to use my cell phone to do this and so its costing me alot. i have a d4700 and a maxtor 6y160mo i was doing a windows repair as my system restore points wernt responding, and half way through it jus stopped and crashed. it wont boot up nw, so i tryed again, this time it completed but still wont boot. i did hd diagnostics and got a code 7 ive just done a chkdsk and it said it repaired some stuff. I need to get my data off it most important, if i can hw and after is it worth still u7ing it. what do i do next?

The drive is not long for this world, and the more you fiddle with it, the greater reduction in the chances you'll be able to retrieve some or all of your data.

You will also have to take ownership of the files you try to recover; note that with XP Home, this MUST be done in safe mode:

Focus on recovering your files starting with the most important ones first. You won't be able to recover installed programs; those will have to be reinstalled from the original media.

You could invest in a copy of SpinRite and see if the utility, will rejuvenate the hard drive, allowing you to recover the data.
