Hard Drive Disk not found
Hello, I have a Dell Inspiron 15z 5523. When I turn it on I get a black screen with the error message: internal hard drive disk not found, to resolve this issue, try to reseat the drive. No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 enter setup menu, F5 PSA I have tried reseating the drive, connecting it to the USB port with a Sata cable but I still get the same message. When running the diagnostic test everything passes including the hard drive without any errors. In BIOS it can only be detected if I switch from secure boot to legacy boot, but when restarted it shows a black screen with a blinking underscore. The hard drive is running, but cannot be booted from. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Is it something to do with the OS failing? I don't want to spend money on one thing and then finding out something else is the source of the problem! Thank you, Alex

Hi Alex,
There's a good chance your hard drive has failed or your boot sector has become corrupted. Did you try running a diagnostic utility on the drive in the USB enclosure? That's the best way to determine if the drive has failed. Use a utility such as Seatools.

My company is experiencing this identical issue:
Computers Affected:
All workstations affected have been upgraded from their factory HDD to a 120GB SSD.
Makes and Models of SSD's Vary:
So as you can see we've had the issue regardless of the SSD brand or model.
Each of these systems will work fine and operate normally until you go to reboot them. When you Restart the computer, it will delay at POST, then switch to a blank(black) screen with only a white blinking cursor at the top left hand corner of the screen. Powering off the system and then powering it back on is the only way to restore normal operation.
Additionally, if you enter the BIOS after rebooting, it will report that there is no device installed in the 2.5" slot where the factory 2.5" Mechanical HDD's are installed.
In the laptops, we've tried installing these drives with and without the rubber HDD spacers, with no effect on the outcome of the issue. Removing and reseating the drives has had no affect.
Part of our computer configuration process is to setup a "source" workstation of each of these Dell models, configure the software and drivers the way we need, then disjoin the workstations from our domain and create an image of them using Clonezilla. We than apply that image to any other identical model and rejoin/reactivate software as necessary.
While it may be possible that the issue is being caused by our Imaging software or process, I find that hard to believe considering the process hasn't changed since when we first started purchasing the Precision and Optiplex 3000 series computers. This process worked fine and resulted in perfectly working computers. This issue began about mid to late 2014 and we've been chasing down the issue ever since. Our imaging process has been in place since 2011, we still use it to reimage our Optiplex 360/380/390's, Latitude/Vostro 13's, XPS 13's, and Fujitsu T1010/T4310/T730's.
It began as an inconsistent and isolated issue with certain computers and has slowly increased in frequency and scope.
Within the last month we have tried a fresh installation of Windows off a Dell Win 7 Pro x64 SP1 disk, on a Precision M4800, and the problem was still occurring afterwards.

Hi Scott,
Your issue is quite different and may vary from system to system. My recommendation since you have business machines is to get in touch with Dell tech support.
In the future, you'll generally get more attention to your message if you start a new thread, rather than post in someone else's thread on an unrelated issue. Thanks.
Good luck!

Scott, we are also noticing this exact same behavior with a number of Crucial SSDs. Did you ever figure out a solution to this?
