Hard Drive Error 2000-0146

Hi, I own a DELL XPS STUDIO 16 ( 1645 ) with a Seagate ST9500420ASG.

I happened to meet a DELL service specialist to repair my keyboard. While doing preliminary boot test i encountered a hard drive error

Error 0146

Message Error 2000- 0146

I was told that I need to do a LOW LEVEL FORMAT. Can anyone please give me instructions to do a Low Level Format on my internal hard drive ?

Thanks.

Hi zeeshanarif,

First, under no circumstances should you attempt to perform a low-level format.

That error itself does not indicate a problem but points to a previously registered problem with the drive when using the self-test. Please use the Dell diagnostics to test your drive, which is the best way to determine if there is a problem. I've got a link to the instructions below. You should boot using your Dell drivers and utilities disc to perform this test.

i already carried out a zero fill format ( low level format ) before posting the above. I did a complete hard drive test using dell 32 bit diagnostic CD .

Results : NO ERRORS.

I boot into pre boot diagnostic dell utility, it says that error.

Error 0146

Message Error 2000- 0146

I use crystaldiskinfo on win7 , i get a caution stating reallocated sectors count is at its worst. 91

I dont know what to do.

Re-allocated sectors means you have bad sectors that have been marked to avoid by the OS. This is not unusual but based on the high number, I would recommend placing the drive.

Good luck!
