Hard drive error

Question

I have a hard drive does show error in one computer but not on the other. It has XP on it. The error is something like this, ' The disk maybe damage or infected with virus. Please restart windows and run CHKDSK.' The error is displayed after the Dell logo. I have been using this particular disk in my primary computer I am using. Last week I have to swap it to my other computer and worked since I was fixing something in my primary computer. Then I returned back the disk to my primary system and this is when I see the message. I swap it with the disk I used in the other system and it was fine. The error only happen when I return the disk to the original system. I even plan to just reinstall and reformat the drive but it would not let me.  Any suggestion? Thanks.

Do you mean you can't format the drive? Try deleting and creating the partition information. Your Windows XP disc can do this if you set your system to boot from the CD drive.

you might try to clear the cmos first. also, might go into bios and set optimal settings. if you want to formatt,etc, boot with a win 98 boot floppy, be sure to set bios to boot from floppy. http://www.bootdisk.com, then delete all partitions, make a new one and make it active. they formatt. if you are unable to do anything, then you will have to look at the make of drive, go to their web site, and make a diagnostic floppy, each manufacturer usually has one, and then use it.

Thanks guys. I was able to boot from a 95 disk and reformatted and installed everything. I am just windering why the disk worked on one system but not on the other.

lot of times the bios or cmos willl not recognize the new hardware, and you have to re-formatt. have had to do this myself
