Hard Drive Problem & Advice

Hi,

My computer is a Dell 4700
For the past 3 days when I try to connect to a website sometimes I will see a box saying,

Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Yesterday I came home and checked my e-mail and then tried to go to Google.  Next thing I see is a bright blue screen saying something about a fatal error.  I call the Dell surrport line and the man had me press F12 at the Dell screen and run the diagnostic check.  It said that the Maxtor Hard Drive had failed.  I have a few questions and was hoping you all could answer them.

I ordered a new hard drive from Dell and it will be here in a few days.  I have never installed one.  Is it hard to do.  Where can I find instructions that are easy to follow?

What causes a hard drive to fail?

Since my computer is only 18 days out of warranty is there anything Dell or Maxtor can do to help me with this?

I am very grateful for any help you can give me on this.  Thank you,

Wornslick

Maxtor has had a lot of quality control problems with its recent drives. Some have tied the issues to the closures of Maxtor's existing manufacturing plants in Singapore and the move to new ones in China.

Any hard drive can fail at any time.

You can call Dell to see if they'll replace the drive, but Maxtor won't; the drive is Dell's responsibility.

Eighteen days?  I'd get on the horn and see if they will replace it for free.  Ask to speak to the supervisor if your not getting anywhere, be polite but firm.  Dell is usually pretty good about this stuff.  As far as putting the thing in...piece of cake.  Turn everything off, I unplug mine, make sure you haven't been dragging your feet across a wool carpet all morning (i.e. don't drop a static bomb on the thing).  Open the case, unplug the cables and remove the old one.  Mine (Dim 8400) has these green plastic things that make it very easy.  You may have to remove them and put them on the new one.  Hook the new one up the same way, snap in place.  I like to blow all the dust out while I have it open.

Oh yea, I like Seagate HDs, get them to send you one of those...

I hope someone will be able to help.  I have a Dimension 4100 and my hard drive crashed the other day.  I took the hard drive out cleaned the machine hoping that mite help, but of course no.  Now I am going to buy a new hard drive, but I do not know what to buy, how much the cost, should I upgrade the hard drive at this time. Computer is 5 years old.  When it was ordered I had some upgrades installed.  Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks

I received the new hard today.  When I opened the box the Hard Drive is a Western Digital.  I am sure when I did the diagnostics check it said Maxtor failure.   Is this OK ?   Also all that was in the box was the hard drive and a blue cord about 10 inches long.  Is that all I need to install the hard drive?

I am going to check the search and see if I can find some instruction on installing the hard drive.

Thanks for any advice you can give me.
