Hard Drive Problem??

Question

MY system is a Dimension 4400, XP, 40 gig, 512. This computer has been off for awhile and I was attempting to get it back up and running. I have lost the original software that came with the system and will need to reorder. Anyway, Windows will not boot and all I get is an error message saying 'a disc read error has occurred' and no mater what I do I can't seem to get around it even in safe mode. Also, the HD is completely silent. Like it's not even there!! I tried running the 90/90 and here is the results:  Primary IDE                         Drive 0: WDC  WD400BB-75CAA0                                      -Fail. Return Code: 4                         Drive 1: No IDE device                     Secondary IDE                         Drive 0: Samsung CD-ROM  SC-148C                               -Diagnostics not supported                         Drive 1: LITE-ON  LTR-24102M                                           -Diagnostics not supported                     Test complete, Press ENTER to reboot   When I reboot it's the same old problem. I agree that the hard drive sounds like toast. But if the system has been off for a while and moved and bumped around, first open it up to be sure that all of the cables are secure on the back of the drive and at the motherboard.

Allmixedup, Data Life Guard by Western Digital will test your drive and tell you where the error is, It saved me the cost of a new HDD one time, it diagnosed that I had a bad ribbon cable.
