I agree that the hard drive sounds like toast. But if the system has been off for a while and moved and bumped around, first open it up to be sure that all of the cables are secure on the back of the drive and at the motherboard.
Allmixedup, Data Life Guard by Western Digital will test your drive and tell you where the error is, It saved me the cost of a new HDD one time, it diagnosed that I had a bad ribbon cable.
