Hard Drive Question

I have a 40gb HD but total size only states 37.2. Whats the deal??? I had home xp and installed xp pro but I deleted all partitions and started from scratch.

The 40G is quoted in decimal (1 decimal gig = 10^9 bytes). Windows uses the binary definition (1 binary gig = 2^30 bytes). 40 * (10^9/2^30) = 37.2 binary gigs.
