Hard drive

My dell inspiron laptop worked great on Saturday, Sunday I turned it on and the error message stated no hard to be found? I ran the resource disk and it did not detect any problems, yet I have no hard drive, nothing works. I tried using the dell systems cd for recovery which also failed. What next?

try removing the hdd then refit it.
sometimes a poor connection can cause your problem.
if that doesn't work then more than likely your hdd has died.

Also try reseating the fixed CD/DVD rom drive. As it is on the same ide channel the hard disk will fail if it has a bad connection. On my 8100 I sometimes got that error message and the CD-drive reseating always did the trick.

I have an external dvd/cdrom drive, will this affect the primary hard drive as well?

No, the external normally has nothing to do with it. IF you do not have an internal drive you should reseat the hard disk as bacillus suggested.

You could try to boot without the external cd-drive attached, but it shouldn't make any difference
