HD missing with restore tool

I have a new Dimension 8400 with

160 HD SATA
DVD+RW double layer.
512 MB RAM
.....
Today, WINDOWS XP won't work: there is an error message after the BIOS boot

regarding missing file (or damaged) in c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM dir.
From the message the advice is to use the recovery tool from WIN CD

Installation given by DELL.

All right, I have follow the procedure
1. reboot the system
2. press the F12 for Boot Device Menu
3. Choose the CDROM starting

Okay it starts to load pre-installation program and all drives...
at the end I press "R" as required for the restore tool. OKAY!

An error screen appear that says no any hard disk is installed on the

machine!!!???? I check on the BIOS... there is the drive!
After few attempts, I check with HD Diagnostics on the BootDeviceMenu: the HD

is fine (test passed!) and it's there.

Could you help me? Yesterday it worked!!

thx,
Anto

Hi nal,

Perform the following steps:

1) Enter the BIOS setup.

2) Use the Down-Arrow key to scroll down to Drives and press Enter to expand this menu.

2) Scroll down to select SATA Operation and press Enter to enter the menu.

3) Select RAID Autodetect / ATA Mode.

4) Save changes and exit the BIOS.

This will allow the operating system to be installed in ATA mode.

Once you've changed the settings in the BIOS you will be able to perform a repair install.

Before you attempt a repair installation, set the BIOS as indicated and boot the Dell diags and test the drive - there's a high probability it has failed.
