HDD failure message- Please help
Getting a message- Windows detected a hard disk problem. Back up your files immediately.
Disk name: WDC WD5000BEVT- 75A0RT0, Firmware 01.01A01
Dell Laptop- Inspiron N5010. Windows 7
It was working fine until a page was clicked on the internet and this message started coming up.Suddenly mouse left button became the right click.
I tried system restore but it did not work.
Ran the PC diagnostic test and following failures came up
1. SMART status test- Failed
2. SMART Thresholds test- Failed
3. SMART Short Self Test- Failed
All other tests like read, seek, linear read passed.
Is the disk failing? If yes what should be the replacement part? And how do I install windows 7 on the new HDD? Nothing came from Dell. I only have a recovery disk and repair disk.
Or is this a virus issue and HDD needs to be re-imaged?
Please help.
Thanks

Hi ashrock11,
As correctly identified by you, it might be an issue with the Hard drive. However, for more decisive results, I would suggest you to run the hardware diagnostics by following the steps below :
Please reply with the findings. Will take it further from there.

The Hard Drive has failed and needs to be replaced, back up any files and folders you wish to save to other media, eg. a USB thumb drive ASAP.
If you have a Dell warranty in effect, contact Dell's Technical Support for a replacement hard drive.

I have backed up the data. How do I install windows 7 on the new HDD? Is it in the recovery or repair disk? Or do I need to buy new?
Thanks

Hi ashrock11,
Good job backing up your data!
If you did not create a Windows 7 recovery disc, you can go here to order replacement discs, including the Windows 7 and drivers disc.
I recommend Natakuc's excellent guide for reinstalling Windows 7. BE SURE TO create a system image after you install the OS, drivers and your important applications. Saves lots of time should you ever need to reinstall again.

Really useful information. Thank you.
Can you please help me in selecting a HDD for the above mentioned model of laptop.
Also I had created a recovery disk when the machine had come new. Can I use the same to install windows 7 and drivers on the new drive?
Thanks again.

Yes, that drive will work - any 2.5" SATA notebook drive that's 9.5 or 7 mm will work fine.

Any 2.5" 9.5 or 7 mm SATA notebook hard drive will work. Yes, the recovery discs will allow you to restore the system to its as-shipped state.

Serial ATA - ANY 2.5" 9.5 mm or 7 mm notebook drive will work. Dell doesn't make hard drives - you have three choices: Seagate (which also owns Samsung), Western Digital (which owns Hitachi/HGST) or Toshiba.

Serial SATA or SATA. The old one is 5400 RPM. Can I buy 7200?
WDC or Dell?
Thanks
