Hot Swapping Problems

On my Inspiron 600m with an NEC DVD+RW, one peculiar problem - once I have finished using the DVD drive and taken out my disc/CD/DVD, and then go to the icon at the bottom of the screen to 'STOP' the drive, so it can be 'Safely Removed', it always gives me an error message, "Error ejecting Drive", with the message that the drive is being accessed by a programme. This, when there is nothing in the drive. Dont know why this happens.

At such times, I was advised by the Dell technical Support to just pull out the module and swap it with my floppy disc module as this is the idea behing hot swapping. I can then use the floppy drive but when re-swap with the DVD drive, the computer refuses to recognise the DVD drive. Then I have to re-start the computer.

Any ideas or people with similar problems?

Thanks
