IDE errors while doing Diagnostics........

This is related to my other post not all that long ago. I got out my diagnostic cd and ran the diagnositc test for "Can not boot the OS" The errors I encountered where the IDE Disk S/N=652N9984T -Read Test. I got error codes 0F00:0244 and msg's for blocks 6420100 ,6421612 and block 6428=0856.  In the Verify Test I got the the exact same error's  , the same error code and the same 3 blocks msg's which read :uncorrectable data error or media is write protected. Yesterday my labtop was just fine today I get all this. I did get this while trying to boot my pc on the battery today, but I don't how that could be related at all.

Dang. Thats what I feared. What is up with Dell hard drives? This is my 2nd hard drive in little over a year. How much should I expect to pay for a 40gb HD nowadays since my dell 6000 is out of warranty?

Dell doesn't make hard drives - they fail in all systems. A 40G EIDE notebook drive should be around $50.

Where do I go to get a new one? Do I contact Dell? I'm guessing you can't get HD's for Dells just anywhere?

In the future, by using the Advanced Forum Search on the bottom of this page, you can quite easily find the answer to this often asked question.

Actually you can.  Dell may have an ok price, usually Newegg or ZipZoomFly is better.  2.5" 9.5mm PATA (not SATA) drive.

Dell has a problem with hard drives. Personally, I think they overheat. I have had an IBM Thinkpad for 10 years, 4 different models, and the hard drive has never failed. Better yet, get an Apple. Their hard drives never fail.
