IDE fail return code: 6

Dimension 4400 Windows XP (2002 - out of warranty); Working on it for my mother-in-law; god help us:smileywink:.

 

IDE diagnostics gives different results each time run.  Sometimes says "passes".  Sometimes says diag. not available.  Mostly gives fail return code: 6.  Can someone tell me what this code means?  Is the hard drive deceased and gone?
