Image mastering API problem

Everytime I log on to my XP account i get an error "image mastering API. has encountered a problem and needs to close"  It also does this when I try to burn cds/dvds.  I have tried updating the IMAPI file and it did update but I still get the error.  I have contaced microsoft, roxio, and dell.  And I just keep hearing "sir, im not sure what the problem is.  Let me research this."  Please hopefully someone here can help.

bbond00743,

Welcome to the Dell Community Forums.

Did you try removing the imapi.exe file before loading the new version?

This could be a couple of things, a incompatibility between the file and some other software on the system, or malware. You may wish to run a scan with your anti-virus software to check on the latter possibility.

If it is an incompatibility, then check any recently added devices or software for updates. Also you may try removing it to see if the error goes away.

ok.  I deleted the IMAPI.EXE file from system32 folder and tried updating it again.  but now the imapi.exe is still gone. I dont get the "image mastering API has encountered a problem" error anymore.  It just says it isnt there to cause an error.  When i went to services to start the service it said it couldnt because imapi.exe was missing or invalid.  I do have hijack this to check for malware but i have idea how to read the logfile.  I also happened to download a few trojans the other day and it messed up McAfee so i had to uninstall it.  Windows defender found the trojans and removed them.  But im still getting the Image mastering API error

bbond00743,

Unless you are trained in it's use, HijackThis can be more harmful than useful.

Did you download the imapi file from the Microsoft website, or from somewhere else?

You may wish to generate and post a log in the Software-HijackThis board, for research by one of the experts there. Many times trojans like to bring friends along.

well after alot of stuff I finally got AVG scanned my computer and yes the trojan brought a friend.  winvirut virus and 49,000 infected files.  So I just did the ctrl f11 thing and hopefully that will fix the problem.
