Inaccessable Boot Device Error

My sister in law gave my son her old CPi laptop for Christmas.  Last night he got a STOP: 0x0000007B error saying that the boot device was inaccessible.  The error suggested running CHKDSK /F tocheck for hard disk corruption.

Questions:

Because I can't run Windows, I assume I want to go to safe mode with command prompt, which I selected in the advanced options menu. The problem is the computer hangs up in the same way at the "Starting Windows" screen and eventually gives me the same stop error.

Second, and forgive my ignorance, should I ever get to the command prompt (assuming that's where I really want to go) do I run CHKDSK /F or CHKDISK /C because C is the letter asssigned to the hard drive.

Any help would be appreciated.

twylo,

You might need to completely reinstall Windows.

Hi twylo,  I don't know if this will help, but I had the same thing happen to me on my Toshiba laptop.  I finally put in a Windows XP disk and ran chkdsk /r, and it fixed the problem.  I read somewhere to try chkboot /r if that doesn't work.

Depending on what version of Windows you are running (I'm not familiar with the specs on the CP_ series laptops) you may still have a functional version of MS DOS on the computer, if you do, you can try and use boot option "Command Prompt Only", or something similiar, it has been a long time since I've worked on a machine that old.  From there you can run chkdsk /f.  I'm assuming you have XP though, so that probably won't help.

Also, you can try removing the hard drive, booting the maching without a HD, power it off, reinstall the HD, and boot again.  I have found that often allows the computer to boot into Windows, allowing chkdsk /f to be run.

I have heard (but yet to try) that freezing the hard drive by itself over night in a sealed bag with no air in it can allow the bearings to reset temporarily, allowing a normal boot so needed files can be backed up.

Good luck.
