Incorrect Function when clicking on the cd-rom drive

Hi,

when i insert a blank cd into my computer, and double click on my cd rom icon in my computer, i get the message "D:\ is not accessible"  Incorrect Function.

With windows, shouldn't it give me a window showing me the files i want to write to the cd.

I can't burn cd's using the windows xp version of the burner, but if i use the Roxio Easy CD Creator, it works fine.

Any sugguestions or solutions, please help !

Egiblock,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

No, this is normal behavior, the system will not be able to open a cd until you write files to it.

I can't burn cd's using the windows xp version of the burner, but if i use the Roxio Easy CD Creator, it works fine.
This is because you have Roxio installed. If you uninstall Roxio, the XP burning engine should work fine.

To use the XP burning engine, do the following:
Put a blank CDR or CDRW disk in the drive.
Highlight all the files you want to burn to the drive.
Right click on one of the files, go to SEND TO, click the drive letter for the burner drive.
You should then get a message on the lower right hand corner of the screen.
"You have files waiting to be written to a cd".
Double click the cdrom icon below that message.
Then either click on "Write these files to CD" or click on File, "Write these files to CD".

even after i get the ballon, it tries to go to the write files to cd window, and then it gives me the same error message.

a buddy of mine has the same laptop, and his works just fine.

plus, i have seen the windows xp burning program and roxio burning software both function on the same computer, using one software right after the other one.

could it be something with the windows driver for the cd-rom drive, or a firmware version ?

Egiblock,

I installed Roxio Easy CD 5.1 Basic on my system yesterday, and it knocked out the XP burning engine.
It may take an update to get them both to work together.
Get the latest Roxio update from the following site.
You may need to uninstall Roxio, and then reboot the system.
Reinstall Roxio, and reboot again.
Then finish by installing the latest Roxio update.
The latest update for Roxio Easy CD Creator Basic, takes you to version 5.3.5.
If you want to verify whether the problem is caused by Roxio or not, simply uninstall Roxio.
Then try using the XP burning engine, if it works then you know Roxio is the problem.
