Jeff,
So far it just seems to be the one CD. I read the Microsoft KB article about Easy CD Creator 5 before posting here, but I don't have that installed. I use Sonic Record Now v7.2 (Dell's freebie). Not even running Sonic and the disk won't open. I'm just trying to access the directory on the CD so I can print the files I need.

The CD was sent to me by a client, and I have no idea what they used to burn it. It's almost 8PM in their time zone so I can't call them until Monday. I was supposed to get this project done today... :(

Hi Ron,

If you are only having that message with the one disc, then I would lean toward the disc. Have you tried it on a different system as well?
Microsoft has an article on it, and a Member found a fix to his problem here in this thread.

Hi Ron,

Can you read the disc from Safe Mode?

Jeff,
The problem CD isn't read in Safe Mode in either the CD or DVD drive. Two CDs burned with Sonic Record Now on this PC can be read in either drive in Safe Mode. So I guess it's that one disk. Makes me feel better it isn't my system.
But why do things always go amiss late on Friday afternoon when you're in a mad rush to finish off a project? Another of those unanswerable questions...

We're in the midst of an unbelievable storm so it's time to unplug the PC, kick back and watch the wind and rain.

Thanks for trying to help. Have a nice weekend.

I am having a very similar problem with the Sony AW-Q160S DVD+-RW combo drive on my 1 yr old Dimension E520 running XP Media Center.

Scenario is this:
1. Blank CD in drive, click on drive letter in Windows Explorer and the "Incorrect Function" error message comes up. Sometimes the "DVD-RW Drive (D:)" nomenclature doesn't change to "CD Drive (D): indicating that it can't even tell that the media is a CD, and the drive just continues to spin. Put any of these CDs in a laptop and the laptop can see the blank disk. Doesn't matter if the CD is CD-R or CD-RW.

2. Insert a CD with data or music on it and the PC will open it up and all files are visible and usable or the music is playable.

3. This problem is not limited to one CD as I have tried multiple CDs from a package of 50. I have successfully used CDs from this package for both music and data.

This problem just came up in the last week. I have done the following:
1. Updated the driver from the Dell site, no change in operation.
2. Removed Roxio MyDVD program (all of it) that came with the computer, no change.
3. Searched the forums and tried all of the troubleshooting tips presented with no success.
4. Un-installed the drive using the Device Manager in Control Panel\System and then rebooted to allow the PC to re-install with no success.

I have not tried any DVDs - blank, with data or movie/games

Your CD/RW Link, Section 100, item 40 addresses this issue but only for using Roxio Easy CD, which I do not have installed on the computer.

Any more ideas?

Thanks!

Hi NWSkier,

When you say update driver from Dell`s site, I am assuming you mean "firmware", correct?

You removed Roxio`s MYDVD, may I suggest you click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 13-0, article 32 and remove all of the software. Just as a test, jump over to Nero`s site and download their program as a trail (Do not install InCD)

If the drive works and you wish to keep Nero, then of course you will have to purchase it.
If you wish to use the Roxio/Sonic software that shipped with the Dell, then reinstall it. Since you did not install Nero`s Packet Writer, install all of Roxio should not conflict.
After you reinstall Roxio/Sonic, jump over to their site and install the latest version of the PXEngine. Sorry this is about all we have on that error message.

Best Regards

Jeff,
Tried to download the latest PXEngine from Roxio for Sonic RecordNow v7.3 but when I click the "download" link I just go around in circles. That link takes me to a page where I select RecordNow, and that takes be back to the page listing the PXEngine download link and around I go.

The site did let me download the GDIPlus.exe patch, so I don't understand why it won't give me the engine update. Any thoughts?

Still raining here! 3" in last 24 hours and counting.

Thanks,
Ron

Jeff,
Thanks for helping on the Sonic download. I subsequently tried using IE6 instead of Netscape, to download the update, in case that was the problem. Went around in the same circle.

Yes, been following the other threads. Just posted a response in one of them. Had to "blue pencil" it before it posted. ;)
