Installing Windows 98
I really do not which category to post this message (there is no 'software' or 'os' category), so here goes. (please suggest a more appropriate category) I have been given a Dell Precision 410, with dual 500 mhz cpus, 2 hd's, etc. Hoping to simply use this 'extra' machine as a gaming machine for my daughter, I would like to put Windows 98 on it as more of the inexpensive children's games are for 98. The problem is that I am yet to successfully install 98. I can get Windows 2000 and Linux on it, but not 98. The problem is that soon after the install cd takes control, it continues to ask me to insert the cd ... but it's already in! I simply cannot get very far with this. Any ideas? Help/suggestions/etc. are very much appreciated.

Many 410'S use a proprietary SCSI CDROM Drive. So heres the trick. You must either make a WIN98 startup disk with the Dos SCSI drivers for the 410 so it can see the cdrom OR an easier method is to set an IDE CDROM to Cable select and add it to the SECONDARY ide connector on the 410. Then it will install. I know the problem because I had this same problem a While back. A third option is to format the drive on another machine with the WIN9X startup disk and then copy the entire cdrom onto the hard drive and then Install into the 410. I recommend WIN98SE over WIN98 but other than that it works just fine on a 410. CDROMS and even CDRW are not that expensive so the simplest solution is to buy a retail IDE cdrom as it will come with an IDE cable etc.
