Intel Application Accelerator Update RAID

Intel Application Accelerator Update

I received an update alert for Intel App Accelerator and a link where to find the update... my dilemma is which of these (or both?) do I install? #1 says download to a floppy and has custom instructions for installing a 'third party SCSI or RAID driver'. #2 is DL'd directly to the hard drive. When I started to install this, a warning tells me that once it's installed it cannot be removed... which makes me more uncertain about which or what to do about this update.)

the link given was: (if more information is needed)

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/type.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&SystemID=DIM_PNT_P4_8400&category=41&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=7548&devlib=41

1) Intel Application Accelerator RAID Edition, v.4.5.0.6515, A01

OR

2) Intel Application Accelerator RAID Edition, v.4.5.0.6515, A08

thanks in advance!

Thank you ... but....

I am getting this from the Dell Maintenance Updates etc...

"Your current version of the INtel Application Accelerator is not up to date. You should update this software to avoid windows crashes."

and

"Your current version etc... Dell recommends applying this update during your next scheduled update cycle. The update contains feature enhancements or changes that will help keep your system software current and compatible with other system modules (firmware, BIOS, drivers and software)."

And my system is crashing so that brings me back to my original post...

Kismette.

If my 8400 has no problems, I leave it alone, the only time I update a driver is to correct a specific problem.

My 2 cents (someone please correct me if I am wrong):  Based on what you've told me and what I understand you may want to do both.  The versions on my Dell resource CD are A00 and A07 with A00 being the floppy version and A07 being the direct install.  I am assuming that A01 and A08 are the updated versions.  When I reinstalled everything on my new hard drive (I had already made the floppy) I needed the floppy to install the AHCI and/or raid drivers during the windows install using F6 for the hard drives to be recognized.  So, I would go ahead and make the floppy in case you ever have to reload windows.  After I reloaded windows I installed the A07 when I installed the rest of the drivers from the Dell resource CD.  So basically I think you can install the A08 now and make the floppy using A01 in case you ever need it.  Hope this helps.

I do appreciate your input.
I am having a problem with Windows crashing so went ahead and updated to the harddrive and am going to save it to floppy too... better safe than have to call Dell in :)

I haven't had my 8400 but maybe two months.. so if this doesn't work, I'll let my Dell man handle it.

Bev,

Best advice. One that has been the rule of thumb since pc's came into being...mac or otherwise. The gentleman who was having crashes may need to apply the update or in fact may be having additional problems. Especially since my drive is not RAID configured, I don't see the need to tinker with what is already functional.

On another note, you helped me do some thinking on another problem I had with my new 8400...the noisy pc. I wanted to thank you for your advice. Dell did in fact send a tech out and my fan was replaced....voila, problem solved.

Between the sometimes scant support from Dell and the Forum Folks who have a tendancy to jump to conclusions, your calm advice is most appreciated.

I'm enjoying my 8400 more and more each day and the fact that it's functional frees my mind to focus on the creative side of the house....isn't that what it's all about?

Thanks again,
Wally

In my case I think Wally's take applies: Especially since my drive is not RAID configured, I don't see the need to tinker with what is already functional.

I have one SATA HD and two IDE [Promise ATA card] HDs--technically speaking I don't think this would be considered RAID, since it's not a RAID array. Is my assumption correct?

I also think that it's downright weird that a machine shipped on June 11 would need an update dated February. If it were necessary, why wasn't it installed when the machine was configured?

[My brand-spanking new 8400 had a few hiccups in the first few days that I traced to weird software conflicts. [Spysweeper was conflicting with another spyware program and there was a weird problem with a file connected to Allume System's WinBackup. Since following Allume's fix and uninstalling Spysweeper, everything's been fine.]

I'm very hesitant to mess with the Intel update, especially reading comments about warnings that the update "can't be deleted." On Intel's own site, the instructions indicate that the native Accelerator must be uninstalled before installing any update. This seems to directly contradict Dell's instructions.
