Laptop DVD playback problem..
Okay..This is kind of long..
I have a Dell Inspiron 6400. Until recently, it's been playing movies perfectly. However, suddenly, some of my movies haven't been playing smoothly. The audio and video is kind of choppy if that's what you call it. I checked this Dvd's and they seem to have some scratches. I tried the same dvds on my other Dell and they are working perfectly. I even cleaned the dvds, but they don't seem to work properly. Some cd's work perfectly, while a few others don't. What could be the reason for this.? is there somethign wrong with my lens? how can it play the dvds smoothly on another computer and not mine..
I've asked many people online for help..but haven't got a proper answer..Please do help..
Thanking you..

The Primary IDE is your hard drive. Your CD drive is on the Secondary
IDE. It being in PIO mode is the problem. After you changed it to DMA
if available, reboot your system and check that the Current Transfer
Mode changed to Ultra mode DMA 2.
If it did not go into Ultra mode DMA 2, you can review the following
article for an explanation if you are curious. If you are not curious
and only want the solution; under Quick Solution in Step 1, click on
the word "here" to correct the situation .......

Check that the drive is in Ultra DMA Mode 2 and not PIO mode.
Start | Control Panel | System in classic view | Hardware tab | Device Manager
Click on the (+) next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Right-click the channel for the
drive and select Properties. Click the Advanced Settings tab.
The Transfer Mode should be DMA if available and below that,
Current Transfer Mode should be Ultra mode DMA 2.

Transfer mode of what? Primary IDE channel or secondary?..The primary IDE channel says:
Transfer mode: DMA if available
Current transfer mode- ultra mode DMA 2...I cant seem to change it to DMA 5
Secondary IDE channel says:
Transfer mode: only PIO..I changed it to DMA if available..

It is always possible that one day it may happen again, but
you now know what to do; and if you forget, we will still be
here for you. Best regards.

Hmm..Thanks alot . But I have a small problem..
You see..After I changed it to Ultra DMA 2..It started playing well on another player, that is MPCstar. Earlier when the Cd played choppily, windows media player wouldnt play it. Now too, even after the PC plays it well, whenever I try to play the Cd through WMP, a message comes "Windows MEdia player has encountered a problem and has to close"..I rolled back to windows media player 9 from 11, but still gives the same message. What's the problem with it?

The drive is now working correctly, but it sounds like you have
developed a software issue with WMP. You may want to start a new
thread in thios forum or, even better, in the software forum so
some persons more knowledgable about Windows and WMP can help
you out better than I can.
