Loading PBR for descriptor 2...done.
I just finished adding a Linksys PCI adapoter to my Dimension E510 and everything seemed to be working OK. However, when I re-booted the computer the next day, I got the following error message:
Loading PBR for descriptor 2...done.
A disk read error has occurred.
Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart.
I tried restarting the system and then I went into the Boot Menu by pressing F12. Next I went to "Boot to Utility Partition" and I ran the extended test. I received the following error codes and messages:
Error Code: 0F00:013E
Error Code: 0F00:0244

Does anyone have any advice on what I can do next?
Thanks,
Pete

It sounds like the HD is dying. I would get a replacement ASAP. It is possible that you can salvage some data from your existing drive, but it sounds like it is in bad shape.
Unfortunately, you will need to start fresh on the new HD and then see if you can read any data from the old one.

I'm sorry, this is probably gonna sound really dumb, but how difficult is it to replace a harddrive?
Is this something that I can do on my own? I would say that I'm an above-average problem solver, but I've never replaced a harddrive before...or even purchased one for that matter.
Can you help me out with any tips or things that I should look for when buying a new harddrive?
Also, just so that I don't get completely ripped off, roughly how much should I expect to spend?
Thanks so much for your help,
Pete

It is easy to replace the HD. See the detailed instructions here.
You need a SATA (not IDE or PATA or ATA) HD. That is about it. The smallest you can get these days is around 160G and these cost around $50 to $60 on sale. A 500G drive will cost about $100 or so. I'm not sure the brand matters much. They all have ups and downs.
Here are some examples at Newegg (check out the reviews). I think I am going to get one of the 250G drives. Not a bad deal. Good reviews too.
