LOCAL DISK "C" ALMOST FULL

Hi guys, I have just noticed that my local Disk "C" is almost full while I don't save any files on it, my overall HD was 500 GB and partitioned it this way: C-194 GB  D-136GB and E 133GB, all my data is stored in disks D and E then I'm wondering what is taking space on disc C, I started payng attention and found that it takes almost 5GB a week, I have now 45GB left from the 194, have tryed lots of cleanup but nothing changes, can someone help?

I am using a dell laptop inspiron 3521, core i3 touch screen and m running W8.1pro, the lap is a year and half older

Hi Edson,

How much room do you allow for system restore? Also, please check your User folder on the C drive and tell me how much space it's taking up.

Well, I am not really sure but my disk management shows a 350MB (Disk Reserved) is that what you mean??

I have just checked and my user's folder has a size of 87.4 GB

Please let me know if I can fix it anyway.

Thank you

Hello and good evening

Have you considered a 1TB External HDD?

Movies, Games, Videos and Pictures take up a lot of GB.

Food for thought

In these kind of situations, I normally do Disk Cleanup and tick the box which says "include system files" or something on those lines.Usually there are a lot of Windows Update files that end of taking lots of space. Also if you have older Windows Installations, they might end in a Windows.old folder which can be deleted. Check the %TEMP% folder as well.

Ok, 87.4 GB in your user folder is definitely a problem since you are keeping your personal files on other partitions. I assume you've already tried deleting temp internet files and any other browser cache, right?

You could try deleting some system restore points. While you're doing that, please check how much disk space system restore is using.

Whow thank you, I have just freed up 9.57GB through system restore points deleting, however something strange happened, -my user's size is now 88.3GB (increased 1GB) and my "C" DISK is now 54.7GB (increased almost 10GB).

Well yes I've just tryed temp internet files and browser caches, perhaps not in the wright procedure but I tryed, is there something else I can do??? Please let me know if there is thank you.

In your original post, you said you "tried lots of cleanup". So what exactly did you try? For example, did you try disk cleanup?

Perhaps I assumed too much based on your original statement.

Thank you, Well I used disk clean up, and a software called CCleaner, but neither of them solved my problem. Please let me know if are there other methods or softwares I can try, thank you.

Have you got massive itunes backup? There has got to be something in your profile that is taking space. Downloads? Pictures? Have tried to check hidden system files and see if anything is taking up space?

And by %TEMP% I did not mean temp browser files. There are lots of TEMP folders. There is one in C:\Windows. There is another one in %TEMP%

Go to Start -> Run , or hit windows key + R and paste the path above. That could have lots of unwanted junk.

However, in your case I suspect, it's windows indexing that is eating up space. Here is something that worked for another user:

"I'm relieved to say that I've now tracked this down and fixed it. Here's how I found it and what the problem was, in case it's of use to anyone else:

First I logged in to Windows as the "Administrator" user.

After logging in, I ran WinDirStat again on my C: drive. Immediately it reported that 110GB was being used rather than 62GB, which made me optimistic. In the graphical display of files at the bottom of the WinDirStat window was one enormous blob filling nearly half the drive. I clicked this to find out what it was.

The file turned out to be C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\Windows.edb, a file used by Windows for indexing. This file was 50GB in size, and was placed in a folder that I had no access to, on my precious SSD drive. Thanks, Windows!

I used Windows' "Indexing Options" configuration window to change the location of the file so that it was on my D: drive instead, and restarted the PC. Windows re-created the indexing files in the new location, but didn't remove them from the C: drive. I therefore backed up the .edb file and then deleted it manually.

And that was it. Now I have 58GB free on my C: drive. Ahhhh. Don't forget to disable the Administrator user again (or at least give it a password, it doesn't have one by default).

Thanks to everyone that posted suggestions!"
