lost programs/ no restore

Question

I was tweaking for spead the last couple of days. Found a program, Absolute start up I think. Anyway I ran it and dident like a couple of things so removed it. When I removed it I lost 2 rows of programs (start/all programs/...) including system tools. I found another place that had the system restore but it won't restore to any point i pick. I found a bunch of stuff in the recycle and restored it but it has changed nothing. I am no where near bright enough to even begin to troubleshoot this. I scared to start, I dont want to totally loose the stuff where ever it is. Please help     the sig is old...........dim. 8300 xp home sp2 no virus,adware,ect.ect. clean as a whistle

Start/ all programs/ half the suff is gone and what is there when i run the curser over it it says empty. All of them. Where is it? no tools, m-word, photo shops...its all empty. I'm gonna puke
