low disk space warning!!!

I have a latitude c600 and keep getting a vitrual memory low disk space alert. when looking at hard drive it shows my drive as a 20gb drive, but it is partitioned at 2 gig with fat 32 file system and only shows 820 mb of free space. could this be the problem and if so how do I repartition to get the full 20 gig size?I am running XP PROand basiclly only use this laptop for internet use and only have about 35 meg of programs installed. Please help , thanks

Back up all you data that is important. Insert the windows cd and boot to it. once the windows install is started it will get to the partition information screen. This screen will show you the partitions, their sizes and what file system they are using. Highlight the partition you wish to remove buy arrow down key, hit the D key and then on the next screen the L key and then enter. That partition will be removed. Do this until all partitions are removed. Then the screen will show you the amount of unallocate space which should equal the size of your hard drive. hit enter and you will be asked what file system pick the NTFS quick option. Allow windows to finish installing then load any drivers you may need for your hardware. Make sure you do all the Windows updates as well so you have all the latest security fixes.  HAVE FUN!

Partition Magic may let you move the partition to take in the rest of the space.  It could also be that someone might have had LINUX or Windows NT on the drive originally and used a 2gb partition. If that is the case, you may have to clear the drive and start over by repartitioning and reformatting; also you may have trouble clearing the old partition(s). This link is for a Program called Delpart.EXE which helps with those Linux or NT partitions

thank for the help you two. As for previous OS the only thing that was on this harddrive was win2000 as I am the original owner of this laptop. I am an electrician and troubleshoot machine systems
programs like RS LOGIX   and INDRAMAT so I had our IT manager put all that stuff on, but had problems with it and switched to XP PRO so maybe she set the partition as fat 32. The company I work for finally bought me a laptop to use so I dont have to use my personal one anymore so that is why I was asking. Thanks again, I appreciate it.

I have a similar low disk space warning on my desktop. i have a 70 gb drive but it has a fat32 partition of 4.04 gb. mine says I only have 32 mb left on it however when I open up the drive to look inside it says I don't have but 16 bytes of used space. there are only three files in there. I don't understand it, when I bought the pc brand new it was set up like that. I think it might be something with windows xp? now my system restore is even suspended because it says I have low disk space on one of my drives. this is driving me crazy! does anyone know how I might fix this? any help would be greatly appreciated. -got
