Low disk space

I have gotten a low disk space message twice in the last month.  I know for a fact that there is plenty of space on the computer.  The first time I got the message, it disappeared a day later. Without removing any files, my computer had plenty of space and no more error message.  I had run disk check and hoped that it was the solution.  When the message popped up again, I tried to run disk check, but now I can't.  Disk check hangs up on Stage 4 of 5 (verifying file data) and it always stops on 31 percent complete.

I've read other forum messages and I run Norton, NOT McAfee, so I know that's not the problem.

I don't know why I'm getting a low disk space message and I don't know why disk check won't work.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Details, details!

What system, OS and size hard drive? From what program are you getting the low disk space error message? What Norton program(s) are you running?

Here's the details...

Dell Dimension 4400

37.2 GB hard drive

Windows XP Home Edition 2002

I'm running Norton Internet Security 2003

The message appears from a hard drive icon in the system tray, but the information is easily verified by checking out properties on the local drive.  Of 37.2 GB, 36.7 GB is shown as used.  This appeared overnight!

PLEASE HELP!

I ran DataDisk to see if I had any huge files.  I don't.

The summary says that 38.5 out of 39 GB is used, but when I add it up myself, I only have 6.3 GB used.  Which is what I had before the message popped up and I didn't change anything!

You cannot simply "add everything up" to see how much space your files are using. There are hidden files you will miss. The first thing I would try is disk cleanup, in Accessories under system tools. Next, change the space allocation for System Restore. Click Start, Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Move the slider to the left (min).

If that does not help, post back.

I spend over an hour with Dell Tech support (I think I was talking to India!). While not very helpful for most of the hour since he couldn't explain why the low disk space message was appearing - he had me doing mundane things like deleting temporary internet files (which I had already done...repeatedly).  Eventually, when I asked about being unable to run ScanDisk (it gets hung up on step 4 of 5), he told me to boot to safe mode and try it from there.  That actually worked and the low disk space message went away.  Now when you look at properties for the local disk it shows about 6 1/2 GB used - so my rough estimate from DataDisk was not off.

My quetion/problem is that this low disk space message has appear more than once.  I don't know why it popped up so I don't know how to prevent it!  And it getting harder to make it go away!
