Regardless of Master/Slave or Cable Select, both drives should be running in DMA mode (UDMA-2). Dell defaults the second drive in the BIOS to Off and at times it does not adjust properly and Windows XP will pick it up and drop it in PIO mode, please check the setting. If this is correct and still stuck in PIO mode, click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 20, article 3, Reloading the IDE controller; if this does not help, same CD/RW link, Section 15, article 13; this is a Dell Utility that will force the DMA setting or let me say is suppose to.
Best Regards

Seems it was the second drive which turned off. I did not think adding a new burner would do this but obviously it did. All is good now. Thanks for your help.
