Maximum disk size supported

I'd like to know the largest HDD that I can fit into my Dimension 9150 to replace my existing second drive which is now full.   I'd like to fit a 1Tb but have been told that the max supported is 500Mb.

Thanks

Hi Harry52,

1TB hard drive is supported by the computer. Please use the following link for the compatible hard drive: http://dell.to/PbGDgP

Ensure to purchase a hard drive of same specification.

Please reply if you have any further questions.

Hi Harry52,

Any standard desktop 3.5", 7200rpm internal, SATA hard drive up to 2TB will work. You can buy from any store.

Here is the replacement procedure.

Thanks for the replies - I'll look at the suggested drives.

Thanks for the suggestions - I bought a new drive (1TB) and have just fitted it in place of the second 160MB (non RAID) disk.   Once rebooted, I noticed that the system installed a new driver BUT the disk did not appear when using Explorer nor does it show up in the hardware manager.   So I thought I must have a dud disk and replaced the original disk, but this shows the same symptoms.

Any suggestions ??

Hi Harry52,

The hard drive might not have got a drive letter assigned or it needs to be formatted. Please follow the below mentioned steps to check if the hard drive (1TB) is detected in Disk Management:

  1. Click “Start”, right click “My Computer” and click “Manage”.
  2. In the “Computer Management” window, click “Disk Management”.
  3. On the right hand side of the window, check if the new hard drive is shown.
  4. Right click the hard drive and click “Format”.
  5. Once the format is done, right click the hard drive again.
  6. Click “Change Drive Letter and Paths”.
  7. In the next window select the appropriate drive letter using the drop down menu.
  8. Click “Ok”.
  9. Restart the computer.

Please post the results.

Thanks - tried that - no additional disk shown.

This is exactly the same if I put the original disk back in

Thanks

I suspect that I have either power harness or interface cable problem.   I've started to get a problem on bootup where a message is saying something like Disk 1 not present.   I've disabled disk 1 in the bios for now.

Try this--connect the second hard drive to SATA port 2 on the motherboard instead of 1. Bios should have this: Main disk is SATA 0 enabled, SATA 1 disabled if you have nothing connected, SATA 2 enabled with second hard drive connected. Use Disk Management to format the drive..

Tried that - no good.   I think it must be either the power connector or the interface cable.

Hi Harry52,

Yes, you are correct! The problem seems to be with the power connector or the SATA cable. Please try using any other available power connector and SATA cable.

Please post the results.

It should support 2tb for boot drives, and any available size (including 4tb) for data drives. (Drives larger than 2tb require UEFI to boot, something I'm not sure can be done with software.)

Now fixed - a quite strange fault in that Port 1 appears to have developed a fault and Port 2 was also faulty.   Now have the disk working quite happily on Port 3 (I didn't think to try it when swappling to Port 2 didn't work).

Hi Harry52,

Based on your description I believe the SATA port 1 & 2 are faulty. The motherboard has to be replaced in this case. Use the following link to check the warranty status of your computer: http://dell.to/Mbe3zg

If the computer’s warranty is active I will be able to arrange for the replacement of the parts needed. If the computer’s warranty is inactive, please let me know the country that you reside. I will be able to provide the contact details for Dell Spare part sales team.

Kalyan S

Many thanks for the offer - the machine is 6 years old !

As it is working quite happily using ports 0 and 3, I'll leave it alone until it fails completely (hopefully some time !)

Regards

Harry
