They are added together. For instance you now have 256mb. If you add 512mb, your memory would now be 768mb.

Right now I can only get a 1gb card. My next question is, does it have to be dell only when it comes to memory cards? Like go into CompUSA or a another like it?
No, you can install other brands of memory, providing the memory is compatible with the E310, hence my reason for posting the link to Crucial, their memory is guaranteed to be compatible, or they will replace it for free.
You do know, that you will loose some system performance, when you don't install matched pairs of RAM in the E310
