Missing hard drive space

My hard drive has 27.91 GB space. I have only used up 15.9 GB space. But for some reason I only have 2.91 GB space left. What happened to the other 9.1 GB space? Please help. It's so wierd.

How old is your system? Chances are you have a system that has the Symantec System restore partition that is chewing up close to 5 GB of HD space. Add in the Windows XP System restore feature which could be chewing up 1 to 2 GB, and if you have Hibernation enabled in your Power settings, this will occupy as much hard drive space as you have RAM.

So, this is most likely what is chewing up HDD space.

To see if you have the Symantec system restore partition, Right click on My Computer on your desktop and choose manage. (If you have the Windows XP Start Menu enabled, it would be start, then hover over the my computer icon, right-click and choose manage.)

Expand the Storage area, and click on Disk Management. If you see a hidden partition occupying appx. 4.7 GB, you have the Symantec System Restore.
