Missing or Corrupt File

I turn on my Insipiron 6000 (which i have only had for 3 months) and when it gets so far it says : Missing or Corrupt file. To use the operating system start up disk to solve the proble,. Well, when I look through the paperwork, i found something that says you did not get a disk because it does not run on an operating system. Why is that? And what can i do to solve the problem because I cant even get to the desktop because it doesnt start all the way!

Call Dell to order the XP CD. Meanwhile, boot, press F12 and load and run the Dell diagnostics, particularly an extended test on the hard drive.

Since it's likely the "corrupt file" is the registry:

If there's data on the drive you need that isn't backed up start here:

Buy a notebook to desktop drive cable or an external USB 2.0/firewire 2.5" drive enclosure, attach the drive to a working desktop or notebook and copy your data for backup.

DO NOT PROCEED WITHOUT A BACKUP - DOING SO COULD BE FATAL TO YOUR DATA.

Return the drive to the notebook. Boot, press F12 and run the extended diagnostics on the drive. If the drive passes, skip the next step.

If the drive fails and you're under warranty, call Dell, report the error and they'll ship you a new drive.

If the drive fails and you're out of warranty, bin it and replace it - any notebook 2.5" drive will work.

If the drive passes, you can continue to try a repair (which fails more often than it succeeds) or bite the bullet and reinstall everything from scratch.

Recovery usually fails to restore the registry; in about 70-80% of all cases, it's a hardware fault that causes the problem.

Have you got any data file you cannot afford to lose?  If that is not a problem, maybe faster solution is to reset your laptop back to 'factory' status.  to do this, re power up system while holding CTRL + F11 key.  You will be given an option to reset your drive C: to square one.

In any case, do contact Dell for all the CDROMS they should have send you when you bought the system.
