NEC 3500A won't install correctly?

Well...I posted another topic about this, but no one could figure it out, so I thought I would post the history of my plight.

I ordered an NEC 3500A, and tried to install it on my Dell Dimension 4700...the first one that they sent, I installed correctly, but as soon as I booted, I thought I smelled a burning smell, and wasn't sure what it was from.

I then, returend the DVD burner, and they sent me another one, and I think the same thing happened.

All cables are connected correctly, but there is NO power getting to the drive (since the door won't even open).

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do (besides sending it back again)?
Is there incompatibility issues with certain systems and DVD burners?

Any ideas on how I can get this unit to work (if it still works, and my computer didn't fry it out)?

If everything else on your computer works OK, then perhaps the power lead you are using to connect the DVD drive has some kind of short circuit in it (pinched or kinked wire, metal plugs pulled out of the white insulator block, wire cut and/or rubbing against the case). If you have other problems like random reboots, graphics corruption, etc., it may be your power supply. If you smell something burning, you better check it out.

SP2 can also cause the NEC 3500 to "disappear" from your system. If that's the case(it doesn't sound like it), uninstall the drive in the Device Manager and reboot, let the system re-recognize the drive.
