Hi Arrive Alive,

These should have been from the Drivers & Downloads link associated with your Dell system. Lets assume they were installed, click on the CD/RW link in my post and scroll to Section 20, article 3; Section 11, article 2; see if either of these will help.

Best Regards

Hi Arrived Alive,

I am assuming your OS is Windows XP; after the formating the drive, did you install the Intel Chipset drivers next?

Best Regards

Hi AA,

This may be related to the Autoplay, same CD/RW link, Section 6-5, article 11.

Best Regards

Hi AA,

I found a Dell firmware update for your drive listed here:

NEC 5800

Before trying this and I should have asked the question first, are you having the same problem with all discs, commercial CD`s & DVD`s, "burned" media (CD and DVD) ?

Hi AA,

Do you have another optical drive on the same IDE cable as the NEC, we have seen at times a second drive interfer with a firmware update.
If this is so in your case, consider disconnecting the second drive and try running the Firmware again.
If this does not work, from that link, there is an older firmware available, which might work, should say "Other Versions"
