NEC ND-3650A DVD+-RW Issues

I have a Dimension 9200 that's about 14 months old and I can't use the DVD RW drive (NEC ND-3650A DVD+-RW) except for reading data discs and pre-recorded CDs. It won't recognize blank discs (CD or DVD) and when I put in a pre-recorded DVD, it opens as a folder showing the audio & video subfolders.

I've updated the driver from Dell but it's showing as being dated 7/01/01. Surely there is something more up-to-date than that! If there is, how can I get it? Do I have to go to NEC's website?

:manmad: I've spent about 18 months creating a DVD show and am extremely angry and frustrated that I can't burn it. Can someone please help me. I'd really appreciate it.

PS I forgot to add that I've removed Roxio DLA (as indicated in another post I read) and all other Roxio programs on my computer. Still no luck.

Roxio is the software that writes to the discs.  If you removed it,
what software are you using?

I was trying to burn a DVD movie using Pinnacle Studio 11 Ultimate 11.1.

However, with and without Roxio on my PC, Windows XP SP2 does not recognize blank discs. I previously mentioned that pre-recorded DVDs open as a folder with the audio & video subfolders. The same happens with pre-recorded CDs; the disc opens showing the files. With both DVDs & CDs (blank & pre-recorded), I don't get the Windows Autoplay window asking what I want to do with the disc. Clearly, something is very wrong.

Why do I have drivers dated 2001 when the PC was built in December 2006?! How do get drivers that are more up-to-date? Will they help? Is there another solution?

Windows XP should recognize a blank CD but cannot recognize a blank DVD.
There is no DVD writing capabilities in Windows XP, thus it is unable to
recognize a blank DVD.

Do you have AutoPlay set up for your preference?  In My Computer, right-click
the drive and select Properties.  Select the AutoPlay tab and set the defaults
you desire.

The driver dated 2001 is the a generic Microsoft driver that all optical drives
use.  There are no other drivers.  You may be referring to Firmware which is the
code held in the optical drives ROM the is unique to each drive.

There was a Firmware update that was issued for Vista compatibility here ..........

It does nothing for XP.
