Need information on adding a second hard drive
I have a Dimension 8300 computer. 1 gig of RAM, an 80 GIG hard drive, and some other stuff that came witht the 8300. I am trying to burn DVD's from my video camera and I am using the Pinnacle Studio 8 program. I have the studio 9, but I was having problems getting it to add music to slide shows.
Anyhow, after researching the studio programs, I've decided to add a second hard drive to my computer. A guy from pinnacle told me that it would be best to have a second hard drive for video editing. I asked a company that services computers what they would charge me to add a second hard drive, and they gave me a price of around 200 to add an 80 gig hard drive and dual boot the systems. They told me I would need to have the hard drives on a dual boot and on the second hard drive I would need to have the operating system (XP) installed on the second hard drive as well as any other program I would need to burn the DVD's and work with the studio programs. The guy at pinnacle said I don't need to have the hard drives dual booted. He said all I have to do is just save the video projects into the second hard drive. But will I have to first work them in the main hard drive and then save them into the 2nd hard drive? He also said I could install the new hard drive myself.
But I'm thinking the new hard drive would need to be formated and I have no clue as to how to do that. My questions are,
#1..Will I need to dual boot the two hard drives in order to work with the videos and burning them to DVD? .
#2...If I have to dual boot them, will I need the operating system (XP) installed on the 2nd hard drive, and any other program I need for video editing?
#3....How large of a hard drive can I put in the 8300?
Any help would be greated appreciated. ......Cindi.

As large as you'd like, as long as you are running XP, SP1.

Try this:
Click 'Start'
Right-click 'My Computer'
Click 'Manage'
Click 'Disk Management'
Highlight 2nd Hard disk under 'Volume' column shown on the screen and right-click
Highlight 'Format' and click. That's all folks!

Thanks ejn63, and Ronnietkh for your reply's. I appreciate them both alot. First question.....What is SP1? I have Windows XP home edition on my computer, but I have no idea as to what SP1 is. Is it hard to put a hard drive into a computer? I have put a PCI card in my computer (the dazzle DV clip, which added a fire wire port), and then I took it out because I figured out my computer already had the fire wire port. And my computer was doing funny things like crashing when I had the dazzle fire wire port in my computer. So after some research, I removed it and it was pretty easy to do.
When I add the second hard drive, will I actually work on the video programs (i.e. the slide shows from pictures on my computer and home movies I put on my computer with my digital camera) on my main hard drive and then just save the stuff on the second hard drive.....or will I be able to put all the pictures and video's on the 2nd hard drive and work with them from there......without putting the video editing programs onto that 2nd hard drive? I'm assuming that from what ejn63 said, I won't need to add the video editing programs to the 2nd hard drive.

Credit should go to the experts (gurus) in this forum because I know next to nothing about Planet-e a few months back. I'm just picking up pieces of information along the way and pass them on to whoever is in dire need. Hopefully, the experts would be able to solve the rest of your problems in good time.
