new cd burner problems
to 'Predetor':
Jeff-I took your advise and replaced the OEM burner that came with my XPS400(gwa-4164b). I went to Newegg and got the Samsung TSST Corp. CDDVDW SH-S202J. I followed the installation instructions on your website regarding the "jumper" setting, placing it on the CS terminals. I then ran the software and let the install wizard run. In the device mngr., the device shows working properly, but the driver is a Microsoft driver dated 2001. I tried to use the Sonic software OEM, but it displays "NO DEVICE DETECTED". In addition,I can only partially burn files. Is there something I did wrong?

Jeff is no longer on the forum.
However, if you installed the drive with the proper addressing (cable select) there should have been nothing else you needed to install. The BIOS should have automatically detected the new drive and the same way with Windows, it should have detected and installed it. The Drivers for ALL CD/DVD drives in Windows (and Vista) are the generic built in Windows drivers, there are no third party or extra drivers that need to be installed. I'm not sure what you installed, but there was no driver software that was required, perhaps whatever you installed is causing the problems?

Thanks for the info on the driver. Do you have any suggestions about the Sonic program. Any media I place in the drawer,it still says "NO DEVICE DETECTED" Worked ok prior to replacing the old GWA-4164B.
Thanks

It may not be installed properly in Windows. Even tho the Device Manager shows it's "working properly" it may not be. Uninstall the drive in the Device Manager then restart Windows and it will be detected and reinstalled.
I've also worked on a Customer's PC that was having a similar problem and it turned out to be another CD/DVD burning program was causing the problem. If the uninstall/reinstall does not work, disable the packet writing program, either DLA or Drag to Disc depending on what Dell supplied as it can potentially interfere with burning operations.
