No bootable devices

We have a Dell Inspiron 8200, was running Windows XP SP2. Now it won't boot. I just cleaned out a lot of stuff on the hard drive and defragged the hard drive. It was working better.

Now when we try to boot up we get the message: Primary hard disk not found. Fixed optical drive not found. No bootable devices.

I ran diagnostics and got Error Code:1000-0141, Msg No drive detected.

I have not tried taking it apart to see if there are loose connections. Not sure I know how to get into it. I've never had a laptop apart. But I'll take a shot at it if that's might be what it needs. What are the odds on loosing both drives and it not being the mother board gone? Or what else might it be? Someone that's been in one might know.

TIA,

Jim

On an I8200, the likelihood is that the hard drive has failed based upon its age.  You can try reseating it, but that's not likely to be the cause.  Click on the Notebook tab above, then your model, then User Guides for documentation.

A new hard drive is quite easily to install assuming you have your original CDs.

I figured out how to get the CD drive out. Pulled it and tried to boot, but still didn't boot. No drives found still. So I have priced a new hard drive, 60GB fro $235. Maybe some more ram when I order it would help this too.

Thanks,

Jim

Why would it not see the fixed optical drive either? That is the CD drive isn't it?

We do have the disks to replace the hard drive.

I just looked in the parts and accessories for the laptop and new internal hard drives are not listed. Where do I go to find one?

Thanks,

Jim

Because the dead drive is hampering things.  Or, it could be a dead CD hampering things.  Pull the hard drive, reseat it, try again.

$235 for a 60gb hard drive is OUTRAGEOUS.  ZipZoomFly.

On the I8200, the CD Drive in the fixed Optical bay is configured as a Primary IDE Channel Slave. When the Primary Master Harddrive is kaput or missing, the CD Drive is not recognized as present. The C800, C810, C840, I8000, and I8100 also share this idiosyncracy. The Harddrive if OK will be recognized w/o the CD Drive being installed or OK, but the opposite is not true. Just replace the bad Harddrive  and rickmktg is correct about $235 for that drive being very overpriced.
